Hello from the frog

A short first post to set the tone.

The math behind whether YouTube Premium is worth it is not complicated, but nobody bothers to do it. So we built a calculator at /questionnaire. This is the blog where we talk about what we find.

What you'll see here

  • Methodology notes when the calculator's assumptions get tested against real numbers
  • Why we pick the multipliers we pick (e.g. why we assume 8 ad-minutes per watch hour)
  • The occasional rant about ad-tech

The premise is simple, summed up by the back-of-napkin math:

hours_of_ads_per_year * hourly_rate > premium_cost_per_year

When this is true, paying for Premium pays for itself. When it is false, the ads are cheaper than the time saved.

"Is it worth it? Like, actually?" was the question that started this whole project, asked at 1am during a double unskippable.

More to come. Frog out.
